The human body is incredibly self-sufficient and contains powerful resources that are constantly working to repair and rebuild your tissues. One of the brass rings of medicine is to harness this regenerative power to address everything from musculoskeletal injuries to aging skin.
At Elite Skin Center, our skilled team of skin care experts follows the science when it comes to aging skin, and we’re pleased to offer a powerful version of regenerative medicine — platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.
Here’s a look at how PRP can combat the signs of aging in your skin.
Your blood contains four components
Your platelets play several roles. Arguably, their most important is to prevent you from bleeding out. For example, when you cut yourself, platelets rush to the scene and form clots to quickly plug up your damaged blood vessel.
With the bleeding under control, your platelets then initiate a wound-healing cascade by releasing growth factors that initiate cell proliferation, regulate inflammation, and call on regenerative resources such as stem cells. Included in this wound healing cascade are fibroblasts that secrete collagen proteins.
Our goal with PRP injections is to harness this regenerative power to breathe new life into aging skin.
To harvest your platelets, we draw a small sample of your own blood, which we place in a special centrifuge that separates out the platelets so we can concentrate more of these specialized cells into a small amount of your plasma.
We then inject the platelet-rich solution directly into your skin. After the injections, the newly introduced platelets quickly go to work releasing growth factors and fibroblasts that rebuild your aging skin from below the surface, on a cellular level.
Your results from the PRP injections are gradual as old cells turn over and newer, healthier ones take their place. In most cases, we recommend a series of PRP injections for best results — typically three — which we space apart to allow time for your skin to respond.
While the timeline varies from one client to the next, most of our clients see wrinkle reduction and tighter skin within a few weeks, and these results usually continue to improve over a few months.
Another great benefit of PRP injections is that they’re considered quite safe because the cells we’re using are your own, which means your body readily accepts, and responds to, the treatments. You may feel some soreness for a day or two at the site of the injections, but the discomfort is easily remedied with an ice pack or over-the-counter medications.
